The Claim (2000)

The Claim (2000) is a haunting and beautifully crafted Western romance directed by Michael Winterbottom, based on Thomas Hardy’s 1886 novel The Mayor of Casterbridge. Set during the late 19th century in the rugged American frontier, the film explores themes of love, betrayal, redemption, and the unforgiving nature of human ambition. With a compelling cast including Peter Mullan, Wes Bentley, Sarah Polley, Nastassja Kinski, and Milla Jovovich, The Claim offers a poignant reimagining of Hardy’s classic novel, set against the backdrop of a harsh, unsettled world where the choices of the past shape the futures of its characters.

The story takes place in a small, remote town called Kingdom Come, which was founded during the gold rush. The central character, Daniel Dillon (Peter Mullan), is the town’s wealthy and influential landowner, but his rise to power has come at a great personal cost. Years earlier, Daniel made a rash decision to sell his wife and child in order to gain wealth, a choice that led to the destruction of his family. Now a successful businessman, Daniel’s life is irrevocably altered when his long-lost wife, who has since died, is replaced by his daughter, who arrives in Kingdom Come, sparking an emotional and moral reckoning for him.
